German startup TrueOcean analyzes global maritime data to inform innovations in natural ocean carbon sinks, renewable energy and route optimization. The company uses AI to predict and quantify carbon uptake and storage in seagrass colonies and seafloor geology. This prediction could be used to greatly increase the potential carbon stocks of the Earth’s oceans.

ASTERRA saves water with GPU-accelerated water leak detection
Israel-based ASTERRA has developed an AI model that analyzes satellite imagery to answer key questions about water infrastructure. This model implements the insight maintenance workers and engineers need to find faulty water pipes, assess subterranean humidity, and find leaks. The company uses NVIDIA GPUs through Amazon Web Services to develop and run machine learning algorithms.
Since introducing its leak detection solution in 2016, ASTERRA has helped the water industry identify tens of thousands of leaks and save billions of gallons of drinking water each year. Stopping leaks prevents surface pollution, reduces water wastage, and saves electricity. The company estimates that the solution has saved the water industry more than 420,000 megawatt hours of energy use since its launch.
