Introduction

Now on to the main topic. I would like to take up the topic of AWS again this time, but this time I will move away from the technical content a little.

Do you know about AWS’s Simple Monthly Calculator? Simple estimation tool ( https://calculator.s3.amazonaws.com/index.html) is a tool that allows you to estimate AWS, but those who have recently started using AWS may not know about it. There is now an AWS Pricing Calculator ( https://calculator.aws/), which are easier to use, have become mainstream.

This old simple estimating tool is finally coming to an end. As already announced on the Simple Estimate Tool page, the service will end at 23:59 on March 31, 2023 local time (16:59 on April 1, 2023 in Japan time). Therefore, if you are using a simple estimation tool, it is better to get used to using the AWS price estimation tool as early as possible.

So, I would like to take a look at what the conversion function is.
*All images below are from the AWS Pricing Calculator.

Simple estimate tool

Create a quote

Now, let’s create a simple estimate using EC2 and S3 in the Tokyo region. I will not explain how to create an estimate using the simple estimate tool because it is not the purpose of this article, but I will take a picture of the estimate settings in order to compare the settings before and after conversion.

●EC2

●S3

And the estimate created is as follows.

Quote conversion function

Conversion from simple quote tool

Now, I would like to convert the estimate created using the simple estimate tool to the AWS price estimator.
Click the “Save and Share” button in the upper right corner of the estimate you just created. Then, a screen will appear where you can enter your name, etc. Once you have entered the necessary information, click “OK”.

After a short wait, the shared link will be displayed as shown below. By accessing this URL, you can view the estimate created using the simple estimate tool using the AWS price estimator.

Confirm conversion result

Now, try accessing the shared link that was generated earlier in your browser. Then, the AWS Price Estimation Tool screen will be displayed, and what looks like the estimate you created earlier will be displayed.

Now, I would like to compare this with the one before conversion.
First, let’s start with the overall monthly fee.

Before conversion After conversion
Overall monthly fee $784.88 $787.36

Oh? There’s a difference of $2.48.
If the difference is less than 1 dollar, it may be due to the handling of fractions in the calculation formula, but the difference is so large that I would like to check the details a little more.

So, I would like to compare the monthly fees of each service.

Before conversion After conversion
S3 monthly fee $25.02 $25.01
EBS monthly fee $17.00 $19.50
EC2 monthly fee $742.86 $742.85

As far as I can see, there seems to be no problem with S3 and EC2, but there is a big difference in EBS charges.

Now, let’s check the details of EBS.
As shown below, when checking the details of the estimate, it appears that the incremental amount of the snapshot, which was not a simple estimate tool, has been added. It is certainly understandable that an increment occurs when a snapshot is taken every month, so it is thought that the AWS price estimating tool has changed to be more in line with the actual situation than the simple estimating tool.

summary

This time, I tried out the old and new AWS estimation tools. As the service of the long-established simple estimation tool is coming to an end, we tried a function to convert estimates created with the simple estimation tool to the AWS price estimation tool in order to migrate.

Assuming that the estimate created using the simple estimate tool was converted to the AWS price estimator, the prices matched! Congratulations! I thought that would be the case, but surprisingly, I found out that there may be a difference in the price due to the addition of features in the AWS price estimation tool.

I had never dared to compare the simple estimate tool and the AWS price estimate tool, so I made a new discovery this time. It seems that not only the UI but also the content of AWS’s estimation tool has evolved to match the reality! Also, despite these functional differences, the estimate conversion function was extremely easy to use and did not require any complicated operations. There is only a little more than a month left until the service of the Simple Estimation Tool ends, so if you have estimates created using the Simple Estimation Tool that you should save, you should convert them to the AWS Price Estimation Tool as soon as possible!
